COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Ohio State University, the defending national college football champion, will open the current season as the first-ever unanimous No. 1 pick in the history of the Associated Press preseason poll. AP began doing the preseason rankings in 1950.
OSU got all 61 first-place votes. TCU was ranked second, followed by Alabama, Baylor and Michigan.
Oddly, OSU has been named the No. 1 team in the preseason eight times never won the national title when so honored the seven previous times, though the Buckeyes did finish second twice.
GOLF
There was a great story at the Wyndham Championship and it wasn’t Tiger Woods. Davis Love III, 51, became the third-oldest player ever to win on the PGA Tour, which will allow him to continue into the FedExCup Championship playoffs. Woods, who needed to win to get into golf’s “postseason,” finished 10th. The top 125 players are invited to move on.
TENNIS
Last year’s Western & Southern Open singles champions both successfully defended their titles, a feat last accomplished in 1938. Third-ranked Roger Federer defeated No. 1 Novak Djokovic 7-6(1), 6-3 in the men’s final Sunday in Mason, Ohio, and top-ranked Serena Williams overcame topped No. 3 Simona Halep 6-3, 7-6 (5) in the women’s final.
BASEBALL
The Houston Astros, who lead the American League West, swept a three-game series from the Los Angeles Dodgers. The series began on Friday night with Mike Fiers throwing a no-hitter in a 3-0 and ended Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 victory in 10 innings on Jason Castro’s solo home run. The Dodgers have lost five straight games.
AUTO RACING
IndyCar driver Justin Wilson was in critical condition and comatose on Sunday night after being hit by debris from Sage Karam’s car at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa. Wilson was airlifted to a hospital. The race was won by Ryan Hunter-Reay.
