In the American League, the Detroit Tigers clinched the Central Division title and the faltering Oakland A’s got it together in time to clinch the second wild card berth, beating the Texas Rangers 4-0. The A’s play the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night in the one-and-done playoff opener.

The St. Louis Cardinals nailed down the National League Central Division before they even played, thanks to the Pittsburgh Pirates losing. The Pirates host a one-and-done against the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night.

We’ll have more on the baseball playoffs this week.

Also notable: The New York Yankees’ Derek Jeter got a hit in his final at-bat in a 9-5 win against the Boston Red Sox. … The Washington Nationals’ Jordan Zimmermann pitched a no-hitter in the season finale, beating the Miami Marlins 1-0. Oddly enough, losing pitcher Henderson Alvarez had pitched a no-hitter in the last game of the 2013 season. … The Houston Astros’ Jose Altuve had to talk his way into the lineup on the final day, with the club wanting to protect his AL batting title lead. He got two hits, hit .341 to lead the AL and also led the majors with 225 hits.

NFL

The Dallas Cowboys won their third straight game, beating the New Orleans Saints 38-17. The Saints have lost three in a row on the road. … The San Francisco 49ers beat the Philadelphia Eagles 26-21. The Eagles scored touchdowns on a blocked punt, an interception return and a punt return but had no offense to speak of. The Eagles dropped to 3-1.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

The top seven teams remain unchanged in the Associated Press poll but No. 1 Florida State finished second to Alabama in the coaches’ poll. FSU had a narrow escape at North Carolina State that swayed coaches. … Kansas fired coach Charlie Weis four games into his third season following a 23-0 home loss (on homecoming) to Texas.

ELSEWHERE

Jeff Gordon won the third race in NASCAR’s Chase for the Sprint Cup at Dover, Delaware, to advance to the next round. … Europe crushed the United States 16 ½-11 ½ in the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, Scotland. Phil Mickelson ripped U.S. team captain Tom Watson’s management style (and rightfully so) afterwards. Europe has won eight of the last 10 Ryder Cup competitions, held every two years.
