Baseball’s regular season ended on Sunday and a month of playoffs lies ahead. The final day carried with it lots of drama and memorable moments.
In the American League, the Detroit Tigers clinched the Central Division title and the faltering Oakland A’s got it together in time to clinch the second wild card berth, beating the Texas Rangers 4-0. The A’s play the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night in the one-and-done playoff opener.
The St. Louis Cardinals nailed down the National League Central Division before they even played, thanks to the Pittsburgh Pirates losing. The Pirates host a one-and-done against the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night.
We’ll have more on the baseball playoffs this week.

He got two hits, hit .341 to lead the AL and also led the majors with 225 hits.

The top seven teams remain unchanged in the Associated Press poll but No. 1 Florida State finished second to Alabama in the coaches’ poll. FSU had a narrow escape at North Carolina State that swayed coaches. … Kansas fired coach Charlie Weis four games into his third season following a 23-0 home loss (on homecoming) to Texas.
