Microsoft’s Kinect is being used as part of South Korea’s border security.
A South Korean programmer has created a Kinect-based system for monitoring the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), which serves as a buffer between North Korea and South Korea.
Kinect Can Game & Guard
The DMZ is one of the most guarded segments of land in the world. So it’s interesting to note that this 2 1/2 mile wide area of land is now being being monitored heavily by Microsoft’s Kinect, the same technology that we enjoy in our living/game rooms all around the country.
The system is helping South Korean soldiers keep an eye on the boarder and it’s especially perfect for this task because it can actually tell the difference between humans and animals, which is a very important factor for trespassing detection.
The new of the Kinect’s new purpose actually came as quite the surprise to the programmer because he never fathomed the Kinect would be used for international defense purposes.
Just goes to show that one man’s recreation can be another man’s radar.
