Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a strong message of resilience and determination during a speech commemorating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Speaking to an audience of approximately 3,000 people in Beijing, Xi declared that no obstacles would halt China’s forward momentum as the country continues to strive for progress and prosperity.
“The path ahead will definitely see challenges,” Xi stated, before assuring that China would overcome any uncertainties and risks it may face. “No challenges can stop China’s progress,” he emphasized, in remarks that underscore his leadership’s confidence in the country’s trajectory.
In his address, Xi reaffirmed the central role of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in guiding the nation through an increasingly complex global landscape, calling for continued unity under the Party’s leadership. He reiterated Beijing’s long-standing goal of reunification with Taiwan, portraying it as a natural and inevitable course of history.
“We are firmly opposed to Taiwan separatist activities,” Xi said, while also emphasizing the need for deeper economic and cultural cooperation across the Taiwan Strait. The Chinese government regards Taiwan as part of its territory, despite the island being a self-governed democracy.
A Global Vision
Notably absent from Xi’s speech were direct references to the ongoing trade tensions with the U.S. and European countries, which have seen rising tariffs and technology restrictions placed on China. Instead, Xi focused on portraying China as a steadfast supporter of globalization and international cooperation. He expressed gratitude to “friendly countries” and allies that have supported China’s development over the years.
Xi also reinforced China’s territorial claims by referencing the concept of “national rejuvenation,” which he said reflects the aspirations of people in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and beyond. He promised to boost the development of Hong Kong and Macao, two self-governing regions under Beijing’s “one country, two systems” framework.
Economic Growth in Focus
Xi’s address comes at a critical time for China’s economy. In recent weeks, major stock markets in mainland China and Hong Kong have seen significant gains, fueled by government policies designed to support growth. A high-level meeting led by Xi last Thursday called for halting the real estate market’s decline and strengthening both fiscal and monetary policies. While the People’s Bank of China has cut interest rates, the Ministry of Finance has yet to unveil additional fiscal measures.
Xi’s 75th-anniversary speech echoes his remarks from 2019, when he marked the PRC’s 70th anniversary by declaring that no force could disrupt China’s development. This year’s celebrations have been more subdued, though the message remains the same: China will continue to push forward, undeterred by challenges, both domestic and international.
