Devastating Loss of Lives Sparks Outrage and International Concern
A devastating Russian attack on the peaceful village of Hroza, located in the south-eastern region of Kharkiv, has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 51 lives, including the heart-wrenching death of an eight-year-old boy, according to official statements from Ukraine.
The horrifying incident occurred during a solemn gathering as villagers were attending a wake for a beloved local resident. At 15:15 local time (13:15 BST), a missile struck, indiscriminately claiming the lives of numerous innocent civilians. Ukraine’s defense ministry has emphasized that there were no military targets in the vicinity; only civilians were affected by this senseless act of violence.
Oleh Synyehubov, the head of the Kharkiv region, described this attack as one of the “bloodiest crimes” witnessed in the region. He confirmed that all the victims were residents of Hroza, further noting that this act of terror had extinguished the lives of 20% of the village’s population.
“One-fifth of this village has died in a single terrorist attack,” he sorrowfully shared during a national television address.
Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko painfully revealed that the tragedy had touched every household in the village. He stated, “From every family, from every household, there were people present.”
Reports indicate that the funeral gathering was organized in honor of a Ukrainian soldier. Tragically, the soldier’s widow, his son (also a soldier), and daughter-in-law were among those who lost their lives. The soldier had previously been laid to rest in Dnipro, but his family had expressed their wish to rebury him in his hometown.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his outrage, condemning the attack as a deliberate act by Russia. He asserted that it was not a blind strike but a calculated assault on innocent villagers who had gathered for a memorial service. President Zelensky’s words resonated with the sentiment of the international community as he questioned, “Who could launch a missile at them? Who? Only absolute evil.”

The Kupyansk district, part of which includes the village of Hroza, has been a battleground since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February the previous year. It served as a crucial supply hub for Russian forces initially, but after months of fierce fighting, Ukrainian forces successfully reclaimed the district in September 2022.
Although Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported that an Iskander missile was used in the attack, independent verification of this claim remains pending.
This devastating act of aggression unfolded as President Zelensky attended the European leaders’ summit in Granada, Spain. During the summit, the European Union’s foreign affairs chief, Josep Borrell, voiced concerns about the threat to U.S. funding for the Ukrainian military due to political infighting in the United States. The recent U.S. Congress budget deal did not include funding for Ukraine, leading to uncertainties about the country’s ability to continue receiving crucial support.
Mr. Borrell emphasized that no European country could replace the vital assistance provided by the United States. Amid these challenges, President Zelensky appealed to European leaders for more air defense missiles, highlighting Ukraine’s critical role in safeguarding other nations from Russian aggression.
