Sarah Sanders is considering running for governor of Arkansas

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the daughter of former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, stepped down from her position in the Trump administration this month. Now we know why: Politico reports Sanders is considering running for her father’s old seat as governor of Arkansas.

Sanders hasn’t officially announced a campaign, but Politico reports that Sanders and her allies in Arkansas are making calls to big-name donors. Political experts in the small southern state say Sanders has a great chance of winning, in part because of her strong name recognition and established ties to prominent Republicans. In 2010, Sanders helped run the campaign for Republican Senator John Boozman.

Furthermore, two Web site domain names possibly linked to Sanders, SarahForGovernor.com and SarahForArkansas.com, were registered this month.

Sanders often found herself under attack as Trump’s Press Secretary. In one incident, she was asked to leave a restaurant in Virginia because the owner and several workers felt uncomfortable serving her. However, Trump–and Sanders–are much more popular in Arkansas than in the nation at large, with Trump maintaining an approval rating greater than 50 percent in the state.

Roby Brock, a political reporter in Arkansas, told Politico Sanders would be a “formidable” candidate for governor.

“She’s got the Huckabee political machine, the Boozman political machine and the Trump political machine,” Brock said.
