SON OF SNOOP

National Signing Day had its usual run of flips, betrayals and drama.

High school kids across the nation were able, on Wednesday, to sign letters of intent with the colleges that love them for their athletic skills (while also praising their minds). Every picture told a story.

Consider the family dynamics in the Broadus household in Las Vegas. Cordell Broadus, a top-rated receiver, has long had an offer from UCLA and on Wednesday he finalized it. His father, Calvin Broadus, is a fervent USC fan. He’s better known professionally as Snoop Dogg.

“I just want to play in front of my family and keep ballin’ out on the field and get a great degree,” the younger Broadus said.

His rapper father was fine with it.

“I’m gonna back him up 1,000 percent and throw out all my USC drawers,” he said. So there’s a little more fuel for that Los Angeles rivalry.

In Boynton Beach, Fla., quarterback Lamar Jackson, who had long ago given a verbal commitment to Louisville, showed up at his high school carrying a Florida backpack. There had been rumors he might flip, especially after his recent visit to Gainesville.

“It really came down to the wire,” Jackson said after unzipping his windbreaker to reveal a Louisville t-shirt. “I had to go with my gut.”

He stuck with Louisville, but Louisville didn’t stick with running back Matt Colburn of Dutch Fork High in South Carolina. Colburn gave his word to Louisville eight months ago; Louisville then did not offer him a scholarship. “It’s not right,” his high school coach, Tom Knotts, told the Spartanburg Herald-Journal.

Your national recruiting winners (by general acclaim): Alabama, USC, Florida State.

How well they really did will be determined on the field over the years ahead.
