Early Friday morning, police officers in San Francisco, California responded to a home break-in call. The home in question was the home of United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, where officers apprehended an assailant who had attacked the speaker’s husband, Paul Pelosi.

“The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation,” Pelosi office spokesman Drew Hammill wrote in a statement.

Paul Pelosi, 82, “was taken to the hospital, where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery. The Speaker was not in San Francisco at the time,” Hammill clarified.

The precise identity, methods, and motivations of the assailant have not been publicly disclosed at this time. This is the first time an individual has directly attacked Pelosi or a member of her family, though she has received numerous threats over the last several years. Last year, North Carolina resident Cleveland Meredith was sentenced to 28 months in prison for threatening to attack Pelosi with a firearm. Steven Martis of Arizona was also sentenced to 21 months in prison for sending direct threatening messages to Pelosi’s office.
