The final chapter to the saga is breaking the box office
“It: Chapter Two,” the follow-up to 2017’s box office hit “It,” grossed $10.5 million in a single night on Thursday, September 5.
The new movie played at a limited number of theaters around the country (about 3,500). The numbers for “It: Chapter Two” is the largest box-office haul for any horror movie with a September release date, besides 2017’s “It.” Both movies are based on Stephen King’s classic 1980s horror novel of the same name. The story follows a group of childhood friends as they battle Pennywise, a killer clown who lives in the local sewer.
The first installment of “It” earned a Rotten Tomatoes score of 87 percent, which is very good. The sequel is scoring about 67 percent after its first night in theaters, which critics say is still pretty high–especially for a sequel.
“Combined with the fan goodwill of the first movie, this second part’s adult cast brings incredible talent into the fold. That should help retain a big portion of the audience who turned out two years ago. The lack of any event-level horror releases since earlier this year also means there’s an audience hungry for this kind of movie right now,” Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at BoxOffice.com, said of the film.
