Hannah Simone talks about how grateful she was when she was cast for a part in the mainstream American sitcom New Girl. Simone is of both Indian and Greek descent and tells about how when she was growing up nobody on TV looked like her. She likes that when Latina or Arabic girls watch the TV and see her, they see a reflection of themselves. Simone sees change and progress in herself. However, the person casting her for the part on Fox’s comedy New Girl simply said that she cast the funniest actress.

That comment also showed progress in how cultures are represented on television. The casting director did not see her culture, but saw her talent. While it is important to acknowledge the challenges that exist, it is also important to look at how many successes there have been in people’s view points and people changing their attitudes.

Shining a light on moving forward is so important as well. Simone has also done producing, modeling, as well as been a human rights and refugee officer at the United Nations. Simone and her husband Jesse Giddings are expecting their first child together.
