Elon Musk Introduces Neuralink Technology
Starting next year, Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla, wants to hook your brain up to a computer. Yes, really. Musk says new brain-chip technology will be available as soon as next year, although he acknowledged that getting government approval for such technology could take much longer.
Musk calls the new technology Neuralink, and says Neuralink will be a small microchip implanted in the brain through a two-millimeter incision. From there, the chip will allow the human brain to sync with artificial intelligence.
Musk said Neuralink could be a game-changer in treating brain disorders, like Parkinson’s Disease, that makes it hard for people to complete basic tasks. Musk also acknowledged ethical concerns about the technology, saying its use would be completely voluntary.
“This is going to sound pretty weird, but ultimately, we will achieve symbiosis with artificial intelligence,” Musk said at a technology conference in San Francisco. “This is not a mandatory thing. It is a thing you can choose to have if you want. This is something that I think will be really important on a civilization-level scale.”
Musk also acknowledged that Neuralink hasn’t even begun the process of FDA approval yet, which will be required before it reaches a mass audience.
“All of this will occur actually quite slowly,” Musk said. “It’s not going to be like suddenly, Neuralink will have this incredible neural lace and start taking over people’s brains. It will take a long time, and you will see it coming.”
