divergentopeningweekendDystopian thriller “Divergent” dominated this weekend’s box office charts, bringing in $56 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales.

Also, the comedy “Muppets Most Wanted,” came in second. It stars the wonderful Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey and of course Ty Burrell.

“Divergent” is about a society that is divided by personality traits. The movie reportedly cost some $85 million to produce.

Lionsgate’s adaptation of Veronica Roth’s best-selling young-adult novels, starring Shailene Woodley, didn’t reach the heights of the studio’s other teen franchises, however a sequel is already planned.

As a point of reference “Twilight” opened with $69.6 million in 2008, and “The Hunger Games” debuted with $152.5 million in 2012.
