The History Behind Stefan

If you are like everyone else in the world – one of your favorite characters from ‘SNL’ is by far Bill Hader’s portrayal of New York’s hottest club promoter, Stefon. Everything about this character was just absolutely bizarre and Hader played him impeccably to roars of laughter from the audience (and often himself too).

But where did this character come from? Hader recently stopped by Huffington Post Live to promote his new Pixar movie, ‘Inside Out’, and was asked by a fan about the origins of the now iconic character. The character was written by John Mulaney after he received an email from a friend talking about some of the hottest clubs that he should try out in the city.

That mixed with Hader’s own encounters with a barista he went to every morning led to who everyone now knows as Stefon. You can watch all of Stefon’s appearances on the new SNL app and be sure to catch Hader along with other ‘SNL’ alum Amy Poehler in ‘Inside Out’ which is now in theaters.
