Candidates express their opinions on Brett Kavanaugh case
After The New York Times ran a story from another woman alleging Supreme Court justice Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in college, many Democrats called for Kavanaugh’s impeachment–including several candidates for President.
Kavanaugh first came under fire when he was nominated to the Supreme Court in August 2018. Before Senate confirmation hearings, a former high school acquaintance of Kavanaugh’s, Christine Blasey-Ford, came forward to accuse Kavanaugh of assaulting her as a teen. Blasey-Ford testified before the Senate, but her story was uncorroborated, and Kavanaugh was ultimately confirmed. The New York Times published its story about another Kavanaugh accuser last week, but ended up correcting the story, saying the woman didn’t remember the encounter and would not confirm the details.
Still, Democrats stood by their calls for investigations, and even impeachment.
“The reality of Kavanaugh’s confirmation process is that it lacked any integrity — there has never been a meaningful investigation into these allegations. We need the truth,” Kamala Harris, a Senator from California and Democratic candidate for President, tweeted.
“It’s more clear than ever that Brett Kavanaugh lied under oath. He should be impeached. And Congress should review the failure of the Department of Justice to properly investigate the matter,” candidate Julian Castro wrote.
President Trump, who nominated Kavanaugh, rushed to his defense, saying the Times’ story had no merit.
“The New York Times made another terrible mistake. It’s a shame that a thing like that could happen,” Trump said at a press conference.
