The Trump campaign has announced its intention to sue the filmmakers of The Apprentice, a biopic that recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. The film, directed by Ali Abbasi and starring Sebastian Stan as Donald Trump, has drawn sharp criticism from the Trump campaign, which decries it as defamatory and false.
In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung stated, “We will be filing a lawsuit to address the blatantly false assertions from these pretend filmmakers. This garbage is pure fiction which sensationalizes lies that have been long debunked. As with the illegal Biden Trials, this is election interference by Hollywood elites, who know that President Trump will retake the White House and beat their candidate of choice because nothing they have done has worked.”
Cheung further criticized the film, saying, “This ‘film’ is pure malicious defamation…and doesn’t even deserve a place in the straight-to-DVD section of a bargain bin at a soon-to-be-closed discount movie store.” The Apprentice, directed by Ali Abbasi and featuring Sebastian Stan as Donald Trump and Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn, explores Trump’s early career in New York real estate from the early 1970s to the mid-1980s. Early reviews indicate that the film portrays Trump in an unflattering light.
Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Strong, and screenwriter Gabriel Sherman have not responded to requests for comment. The Trump campaign’s legal action underscores their commitment to challenging what they view as malicious and unfounded attacks on the former president’s character and legacy.
