Spectacles
You’ve probably heard about Snapchat’s latest product ‘Spectacles’ that allow users to capture short videos from their perspective and upload straight to the app. With a 115 degree view, the glasses could signal a transition for the company, which recently rebranded itself as simply ‘Snap’. The company Snapchat has reportedly acquired 3-D capture company Seene earlier this year and the company has talked about adding new features.
The $129 shades are reported to be coming soon. The product is being called a “toy” by founder Evan Spiegel. But if we have learned anything by now, it is to not underestimate the power of a snap. The colorful, retro-looking ‘Spectacles’ may be way more than just a toy. These could be the test to see if it is possible to begin developing augmented and virtual reality products in a more every day manner.
It could also change the way we think of cameras and how they are used. Rather than having to take out a camera or phone, it is right there. Being branded as a toy and not as the next big technology, in addition to the number of people in their 20’s who use Snap will potentially make ‘Spectacles’ a larger seller than the company might anticipate. This “toy” could also potentially elevate Snap up to the level of major companies, such as Facebook and Google. Snap on!
