As technology changes, so do we
It is often heard that technology is worrisome for its ability to replace workers and put people out of work. This may be true, but technology is also creating jobs and changing the workforce in many positive ways! Technology can create new jobs and change the ones that already exist, making them easier, similar to the way mechanization increased productivity in the Industrial Era.
Some jobs that did not exist twenty years ago (which, shockingly, was 1998, people) are social media content managers, corporate sustainability managers, Uber drivers, marijuana farmers, social influencers, online store owners, and 3-D print operators.
These new job titles reflect changing values of society. For example, it is important to consumers that the corporations they support are ecologically mindful and sustainable. Consumers also appreciate the all the ease that goes along with ordering an Uber instead of waving down a taxi.
Entrepreneurs can get their start or manage their entire product line through digital storefronts, a dream they may not have been able to fulfill the old-fashioned way.
It’s also incredible the way that social media has reshaped job markets. Whether it’s through advertising and publicity, journalism, comedy and entertainment, how-tos and information resources, or lifestyle influencing, technology has made a huge impact on the profitability of many skills and talents.
