The Republican-led House Oversight Committee has announced a hearing scheduled for next Monday, aiming to address questions directed at the Secret Service Director following the recent shooting incident involving former President Donald Trump.
Committee Chair James Comer, R-Ky., stated, “The United States Secret Service has a no-fail mission, yet it failed on Saturday when a madman attempted to assassinate President Trump, killed an innocent victim, and harmed others.” The hearing, which will focus on oversight of the U.S. Secret Service and gather information from Director Kimberly Cheatle, is set for 10 a.m. ET.
The incident occurred during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a gunman opened fire on former President Trump. The attack resulted in the death of rally attendee Corey Comperatore, 50, a former chief of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company. Two others, David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74, were injured.
Authorities have identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park. Crooks, a member of a local gun club and an employee at a nursing facility, was a registered Republican who had once made a $15 donation to a progressive political organization. Investigators have yet to determine a clear motive for the attempted assassination.
Further updates have revealed that more than a dozen guns were found at Crooks’ residence, raising concerns about how such an arsenal was amassed without detection. The upcoming hearing will seek to uncover how this incident occurred under the Secret Service’s watch and what measures can be taken to prevent similar threats in the future.
The House Oversight Committee’s efforts underscore the urgency and gravity of addressing security lapses and ensuring the safety of public figures and citizens alike.
