Demi debuts new song at the Grammys
Demi Lovato, the actress and singer who has battled drug addiction, eating disorders, and mental health issues, triumphantly took the stage at the Grammys in a white gown to debut her new song, “Anyone.” Lovato said she wrote the song shortly before she overdosed on heroin and was rushed to the hospital in 2018.
It was Lovato’s first performance since her overdose. She said she wrote “Anyone” as a “cry for help” while she was in the throes of her addiction. Lovato was so emotional during her performance that she had to stop and start over.
“Anyone, please send me anyone/Lord, is there anyone? / I need someone,” the lyrics read. “I used to crave the world’s attention / I think I cried too many times / I just need some more affection / Anything to get me by.”
Lovato’s performance prompted a standing ovation from the crowd, who eagerly cheered the singer’s comeback.
“I almost listen back and hear these lyrics as a cry for help,” Lovato told Good Morning America on Friday. “And you kind of listen back to it and you kind of think, ‘How did nobody listen to this song and think, Let’s help this girl?’…I was recording it in a state of mind where I felt I was okay, but clearly I wasn’t. I even listen back to it and I’m like, ‘Gosh, I wish I could go back in time and help that version of myself.’”
