The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards is just around the corner as the scheduled event is less than a week away. What can viewers expect from the coming awards night which is all about recognizing the brilliant works of the television industry this year?

Simply Star-Studded

‘Glee’ star Neil Patrick Harris is set to host the ceremony which will air live from Los Angeles. It is no secret how good a host Harris can be, if winning two Emmy awards for his Tony hosting are any indications.

For this hosting stint, Harris is set to bring his bag of tricks with him, literally, as his other official job aside from acting is being a magician. For this year’s Emmys, the actor has a prestidigitation theme all prepped up.

Aside from Harris, the line-up of celebrities that is set to act as presenters for the show include Will Arnett and Margo Martindale of CBS’ The Millers, two-time Emmy winner actor Alec Baldwin, Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine Andre Baugher, Bryan Cranston who is a three-time Emmy recipient, two-time winner actress Claire Danes, nominee Jimmy Kimmel, Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara who is also an Emmy nominee this year, Diahann Carroll, Matt Damon, sisters Emily and Zoey Deschanel,  Michael Douglas, Anna Faris, Tina Fey, Allison Janney, Amy Poehler and Kerry Washington.

English singer Elton John is also set to perform Sunday night and he is planning on doing a tribute to famous pianist/singer Liberace.

The Nominations

FX’s American Horror Story: Asylum leads this year’s nominations with nods in 17 categories. The series is closely followed by HBO’s Game of Thrones with names in 16 categories while NBC’s Saturday Night Live and another HBO feature, Behind the Candelabra, ties in third with 15 nominations.

Special Feature

In Memoriam is a traditional segment in the Emmys that give special tribute to the TV personalities who have passed throughout the year.

In this year’s special In Memoriam segment, five TV stars are given that recognition, with one young tribute recipient raising the hackles of many – Sopranos star James Gandolfini, All in the Family actress and three-time Emmy recipient Jean Stapleton, Mork and Mindy’s Jonathan Winters, Family Ties creator Gary David Goldberg and Glee’s Cory Monteith.

Tributes to these deceased TV personas will be given by celebrities who have worked closely with them – Edie Falco, Rob Reiner, Robin Williams, Michael J. Fox and Jamie Lynch, respectively.

“These five individuals brought us such great entertainment and joy, so having their close friends share personal remembrances is something that will be very meaningful for television audiences across the country and across the generations,” said executive producer Ken Ehrlich about this year’s In Memoriam legatees.

However, many voiced adverse reactions about the inclusion of Glee actor Cory Monteith in the list who died earlier this year due to drug and alcohol overdose.

“We’re sensationalizing his death,” wrote one who questioned Monteith’s inclusion given that he died from a less honorable death, that is, due to the use of drugs.

Nevertheless, there are also a number of people who supported Monteith’s inclusion and spoke up on his defense.

“He is not being awarded an Emmy. He is being memorialized for his lead work in a show that was an instant, major television phenomenon from the time its[pilot aired, that did something not before seen on TV, and that deeply touched people worldwide,” wrote another.

The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards will be on September 22 in Nokia Theatre, LA. CBS will air the event live.
