A Sports Filled Weekend It Was
Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s boxing career ended (again, as boxers never really retire) with a victory Saturday night in Las Vegas over mixed martial artist and UFC lightweight champion Colin McGregor.
Mayweather scored a 10th round technical knockout over a game but tired McGregor and concludes (maybe) his career with a mark of 50-0. Mayweather’s take from this weird match up of retired fighter and UFC battler: $300 million or so, thanks to huge pay-pre-view sales. Hence his nickname: Money.
GOLF: Jordan Spieth led after 54 holes of the Northern Trust, the first tournament in the FedEx Cup competition, in Old Westbury, New York. He did not win. Dustin Johnson, who went into Sunday’s final round trailing Spieth by three shots, won on the first playoff hole. A double-bogey by Spieth on the sixth hole hurt him and Johnson’s birdie on the 10th tied them. Johnson finished that final round at 66, prompting Spieth to observe: “I didn’t lose the tournament. He won.”
BASEBALL: The Miami Marlins’ Giancarlo Stanton hit his 50th home run on Sunday in the eighth inning of a 6-2 victory over the San Diego Padres. Stanton leads the majors in homers. He’s the first in MLB to hit 50 in a season since the Baltimore Orioles’ Chris Davis did it in 2013 and the first in the National League since Prince Fielder in 2007 with the Milwaukee Brewers. … The Cleveland Indians swept three games, all by shutout, from the Kansas City Royals, winning 12-0 on Sunday. The Royals haven’t scored in 34 innings, the longest drought in their history.
FOOTBALL: Injuries keep mounting in the NFL’s preseason. The Kansas City Chiefs lost running back Spencer Ware (921 yards last season) to a knee injury, and that same fate also befell Chicago Bears receiver Cameron Meredith and New England receiver Julian Edelman. … Stanford crushed Rice 62-7 in Australia, with running back Bryce Love, the heir to Christian McCaffrey’s position, exploding for 180 yards and a touchdown.
