Trump protecting Kellyanne
A longtime advisor to President Trump, Kellyanne Conway, has been accused of the Office of Special Counsel of repeatedly violating the Hatch Act, a law that bans federal government employees from engaging in political activity while on the job.
The Office of Special Counsel called Conway a “repeat offender” and recommended she be fired.
Trump said it’s not going to happen.
“No, I’m not going to fire her. I think she’s a terrific person. She’s a tremendous spokeswoman. She’s been loyal. She’s just a great person,” Trump told Fox News. “I got briefed on it yesterday, and it looks to me like they’re trying to take away her right of free speech, and that’s just not fair.”
Conway is accused of breaking the law by using her position as a White House counselor to criticize Democrats. The Office of Special Counselor released a detailed report explaining how Conway had repeatedly attacked Democrats running for President in 2020 in media interviews, a clear violation of the Hatch Act. Special Counsel Henry Kerner, a Trump appointee, said Conway needs to be fired.
“In interview after interview, she uses her official capacity to disparage announced candidates, which is not allowed,” Kerner said. “What kind of example does that send to the federal workforce? If you’re high enough up in the White House, you can break the law, but if you’re a postal carrier or a regular federal worker, you lose your job?”
