Tesla will help bring more power to Texas
Tesla is working on a new energy storage project in Texas keeping the project under wraps but the limited details of the project are gaining media attention for the potential of helping power 20,000 homes. The Tesla subsidiary, Gambit Energy Storage, is working to install the company’s modular Megapacks, a container-sized battery for large-scale storage to replace power plants and quickly deploy renewable energy.

The project is reported to be a 100MW installation that will be able to power 20,000 homes and The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) disclosed that the site will be able to begin operations starting in June. Currently, Tesla is supplying Pacific Gas and Electric in California with Megapacks for an in-progress project for Bay Area Moss Landing.
Experts are questioning why Tesla is developing the project through a subsidiary instead as the public face of this project but will be a continuation of Tesla’s efforts to power more regions with the Megapack technology. Tesla successfully built a 100MWh battery farm in South Australia and will be working towards helping Texas recover after the unprecedented winter weather left a majority of Texas without power.

During the Texas power outage, Tesla CEO mocked ERCOT who manages nearly 90 percent of the state’s power grid tweeting “Not earning that R” standing for reliability. Following the scrutiny of ERCOT’s reliability, followers asked Musk on Twitter whether Tesla could create a similar battery storage project in Texas following the model used in Australia with Musk simply replying “Yes.”
The new project will bring more reliable power sources to the U.S. while presenting more options for further development in more states.
