Samsung beats Apple as the Korean tech company is reportedly launching its take on the “smartwatch” at the IFA consumer electronics trade show in Berlin today.
Galaxy Gear
Samsung has booked a slot in the Berlin event to introduce its Galaxy Note 3 which is an update of its current on-sale large-screened smartphone-tablet model, collectively named phablet. However, tech savvy people are all looking forward to the unveiling of the company’s first take on the “smartwatch” class; the device dubbed by many as the Galaxy Gear. Its creation and launch date was already confirmed by one Samsung executive in an interview over the past week.
“We will be introducing a new wearable concept device called Galaxy Gear at our own event in Berlin on Sept. 4,” Lee Young-hee, Samsung’s Executive Vice President stated. “The Gear won’t have a flexible display. The new device will enhance and enrich the current smart mobile experience in many ways. It will lead a new trend in smart mobile communications. We are confident that the Gear will add meaningful momentum to the mobile industry,” she added. Based on the executive’s words, it can be inferred that the Korean tech giant has been preparing for this device for quite some time now and its making is aimed to get the attention of young trendsetters.
Miss Lee had also made it clear that the Galaxy Gear is just one of the many ideas they have in mind – that Samsung is ready to introduce more advanced models in the future. Samsung is attacking its competitors through the Galaxy Gear. By unveiling it ahead of the others, the company hopes to gain the upper hand by making the first next step in technological evolution in the wearable device market, considering the overabundance of smartphone models in the market could lead to its saturation.
Rumored Features
According to a number of technological devices sites, the Galaxy Gear will go as a complement to a smartphone as these devices and tablets do to laptops and desktop computers. It is described as a ”clunky 3-inch accessory mounted to the wrist” designed to work side by side with existing Galaxy smartphones also manufactured by Samsung through Bluetooth.
It is presumed that since it bears the Galaxy brand, consumers can expect it to be fitted with the usual features present in a Galaxy device like a built-in microphone which backs voice commands, built-in speakers, a 4-megapixel camera, and is WIFI-enabled. Another Galaxy Gear leak claimed the smartwatch will have a 2.5-inch screen with a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor and a RAM of 1 GB.
Confusion
Nevertheless, even if Samsung’s Galaxy Gear seems to be promising, critics have been repeatedly asking “What’s the point?” when it comes to its relevance.
Others state that the smartwatch will find it hard to establish itself among buyers due to the size factor. As one finance technology reporter said, people generally buy watches to look good, and a 3-inch one (the size of the Galaxy Gear) might just be too big for majority of people’s wrists. This fact could put them off from buying the device. Aside from these issues, however, there is nothing as exciting as seeing a new contraption and discover its capabilities. At the moment, that happens to be Samsung’s Galaxy Gear.
