Trump isn’t backing down from his comments that four freshmen Democratic Congresswomen, who call themselves “The Squad,” should “go back to where they came from”–and neither are his supporters. At a Trump rally in Greenville, North Carolina, on Wednesday night, the audience chanted “Send her back” when Trump attacked Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota. Omar was born in Somalia and came to the United States as a child refugee.
At the rally, Trump accused Omar of hating America and sympathizing with Al Qaeda and ISIS terrorists.
“At a press conference just this week, when asked whether she supported Al Qaeda–that’s our enemy, they are a very serious problem, that we take care of, but they always seem to come along somewhere–she refused to answer,” Trump said “Omar blamed the United States for the crisis in Venezuela. I mean, think of that one. And she looks down with contempt on the hardworking Americans, saying that ignorance is pervasive in many parts of this country.”
Omar responded on Twitter by quoting master poet Maya Angelou.
“You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I’ll rise,” Omar tweeted.
Earlier this week, the House of Representatives voted to condemn Trump’s tweets about the four Congresswomen.
