The US exited the Paris Agreement last year under former President Donald Trump’s orders marking the US as the first and only country to exit the agreement since its adoption in 2015. Rejoining the Paris Agreement is one of Biden’s ventures to reverse environmental regulations and policies that were loosened and rolled back during the Trump administration.
The United States joined the Paris Agreement during the Obama administration pledging to reduce carbon emissions by 26% to 28% below 2005 levels by 2025. Climate negotiations were planned for November 2020 as a summit for nations to increase greenhouse gas emission pledges but the global COVID-19 pandemic put plans on hold.
