Nokia, whose hardware division has been acquired by Microsoft, has officially showcased its first tablet device to its customers. The device named Lumia 2520 has been unveiled at a launch in Abu Dhabi. Nokia’s Lumia 2520 Tablet runs on Windows RT and has a screen size of 10.1 inches.
Operating System
When releasing the tablet, Microsoft product chief, Stephen Elop, in his speech mentioned that Nokia chose Windows RT due to its lower power consumption. This gives the tablet the capacity to be used outdoors without worrying about the battery charge levels for 8 to 10 hours. Stephen Elop also added that this Nokia tablet device has been designed specifically to be used outside of the house without issue.
Faster Processing Capability
Lumia 2520 tablet comes with a 2GB RAM memory, 32GB of internal storage, is LTE ready, and is powered by the snapdragon 2.25 GHz quad core processor. It also supports WiFi connectivity.
Lumia Tablet Hardware Capabilities
The screen is made out of Gorilla glass and comes with a capability to display pictures in full HD specification of 1920*1080 pixels. The device weighs 600g and measures 9mm in thickness, making it one of the lightest tablets available in the market place. The device comes with a front facing stereo speaker. As far as the camera specifications are concerned, Lumia 2520 tablet comes with a 6.7 mega pixels rear-facing camera and a 2 mega pixel front facing camera. The device comes integrated with accelerometer, barometer, magnetometer, gyroscope, ambient light sensor, and proximity sensor.
Lumia 2520 Software Capabilities
The Lumia tablet comes loaded with the video editing software, Nokia Video Director. The photo curation app called the Storyteller lets the user transfer photos between this tablet device and Nokia Lumia smartphones with a single tap. There is also software that can arrange photos based on the location they were taken and also the date and time when it was taken. This tablet device becomes the first Nokia Lumia device to have an instagram app. Using this app, users can share their photos and videos across different social network platforms.
Nokia is planning to ship the Lumia tablets from the fourth quarter in four different colors – red, white, cyan and black. Gartner Analyst Annette Zimmerman remarked that the Lumia tablet has a nice design to it and offers a good value proposition to Nokia. She also adds that if priced correctly, it has the capability to cut in to the market share currently dominated by Samsung tablets and Apple iPads.
The latest Nokia tablet device has been receiving positive reviews from technology blogs and critics since its official unveiling on October 22, 2013. Forrester Analyst Thomas Hussen in his remarks mentioned that this Nokia tablet has the capability to increase the Windows RT and Windows Phone mobile user base from its current low levels. He also added that Microsoft has to come up with a strategy to market this Nokia tablet along with its own tablet range, surface devices. This would assume crucial significance when Microsoft completes the full acquisition of Nokia’s phone business.
