Man arrested for threatening a congresswoman
Last weekend’s back-to-back mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio have sparked plenty of heated rhetoric–but authorities are taking threats very, very seriously. An Ohio man has been arrested for saying Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez “should be shot.”
Timothy James Ireland, who posted the comment on Facebook, was arraigned at a district court in Toledo, Ohio.
“She should be shot. Can’t fire me, my employer would load the gun for me,” Ireland wrote. Prosecutors said they interviewed Ireland, and he said he was “proud” of the post.
“He stated he made the statements and was very proud of the post he made,” prosecutors wrote. “He also stated he has firearms and always carries them concealed.”
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, or AOC, has had her share of controversies this summer. AOC is part of a group of four Democratic Congresswomen who call themselves “The Squad.” In July, President Donald Trump was formally denounced by Congress for saying members of The Squad should “go back to where they came from.” He also accused the representatives of “hating America.”
“The ‘Squad’ is a very Racist group of troublemakers who are young, inexperienced, and not very smart. They are pulling the once great Democrat Party far left, and were against humanitarian aid at the Border…And are now against ICE and Homeland Security. So bad for our Country!” Trump tweeted last month.
AOC responded by telling the children of America she had a message for them: “This country belongs to you, and it belongs to everyone.”
