Songwriter comes forward accusing Lizzo

“Truth Hurts” by Lizzo is arguably the biggest song of 2019. But now that the song, which was first released in 2017, has become a huge hit, two brothers are coming forward to accuse Lizzo of plagiarism.

Songwriter Justin Raisen said that he, along with his brother and two other songwriters, wrote the famous opening lines for “Truth Hurts” while working on another song called “Healthy.” Lizzo then used the line in her own song: “I just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100 percent that b—-.”

“On April 11th, 2017, we wrote a song called ‘Healthy’ w/ Lizzo, Jesse St John, and Yves Rothman at our studio. ‘I just took a DNA test turns out I’m 100% that bitch’ was taken from ‘Healthy’ and used in ‘Truth Hurts’,” Raisen wrote on Instagram. “We were never contacted about being credited for the use of the parts of ‘Healthy’ (melody, lyrics, and chords) that appear in ‘Truth Hurts.’ After reaching out to Ricky Reed and Lizzo’s team about fixing it, we put the song in dispute in 2017 when it came out. We’ve tried to sort this out quietly for the last two years, only asking for 5% each but were shutdown every time.”

Raisen says he’s not trying to inject “negativity” into Lizzo’s “momentum and movement as a cultural figure.” But Lizzo’s fans are skeptical. “If the song wasn’t big y’all wouldn’t have cared. Broke b—-es trying to make a dime off of someone’s success!” one fan wrote below Raisen’s post.
