Mamoru Hosoda Is Releasing A New Anime Film
Mamoru Hosoda, director of cult classic anime films including The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and Wolf Children, will be releasing his next film in the west on November 30th. The film, titled Mirai, follows Kun, a 4-year-old boy who has lost the attention of his parents to his newly-born baby sister, the eponymous Mirai.
Out of frustration, Kun runs off into a forest and finds himself in a mysterious garden disconnected from time and space. Here he meets a teenage version of Mirai from the future who tries to help him find his way back home. The duo must navigate through various surreal locations and time periods in order to get Kun back to his family.
The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, where it received unanimous critical praise from all attending film journalists, with one proclaiming the film to be a capstone on Hosoda’s directing career. Mirai will be premiering to the public with English subtitles in select theaters starting November 30th. Check your local listings to see if it will be showing.
