Dexter is a drama about a forensic expert who is also a serial killer. If you’ve never watched the show, Dexter Morgan was abandoned by his mother at the age of 3. Later, Dexter was adopted by policeman Harry Morgan and family. When Harry discovered that his adopted son Dexter had been killing neighborhood pets as a child (and he had been doing it for some time), he believed that the child had already developed an addiction to murder. He also believed that his murders would grow worse with time.

Since Harry didn’t believe Dexter would ever get better, he made him agree to a few things to minimize any possible repercussions. First, he must never get caught. Second his victims have to be killers too and who would likely kill again. And third, he must be absolutely sure of his victim’s guilt. Harry also teaches him how to express fake emotions and how to avoid capture. Since Harry is a policeman, that’s something he knows quite a lot about.

But Will There Be a Spinoff or Not?

Recently, Showtime signed a two year contract with Dexter executive producer Scott Buck. Dexter is now into its final season and fans are naturally interested. When asked about the spinoff, Showtime executive producer David Nevins revealed the new contract with Buck and added that reporters should come to their own conclusions. But Showtime has also said they are working with Buck on several projects. When questioned further, Nevins acknowledged his evasive answer and added that, currently, their focus is on creating a satisfying ending to Dexter.

Current Sources Say…Maybe!

Even though Showtime is not will to offer more than hints about a possible spinoff, Nevins has said that Dexter has been one of their most popular shows and that they are eager to learn what else Buck can add to their other projects. One thing is for sure, Buck will be working with Showtime for the foreseeable future. So even if there isn’t a spinoff, viewers will still be able to enjoy the talents of Buck and Hall for the foreseeable future! Both have worked on Six Feet Under, as well as other productions individually.

Other Showtime Projects

American Dream Machine is among the possible projects that Showtime is developing with Buck. It’s based on Matthew Spektor’s novel which was released this spring. The story involves a talent agent and his sons. It tells a story about the movies, the changes that have taken place in the film industry and a narrative between fathers and sons. It mostly takes place in Hollywood during the 1970s but there are also scenes that are set in modern day. Michael C. Hall, who plays the role of Dexter, will serve as executive producer of the show. He may also do some acting but only in a very small role. He has said he wants to stay behind the camera for now. Buck will be supervising the script.
