Hunk Charlie Hunnam is ready to prove to the world that he can do Christian Grey’s character complete with the explicit sex scenes. In the face of the ongoing petition against his being casted to play the male protagonist in the film adaptation of E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey, the Pacific Rim and Sons of Anarchy star declared that he is more than capable to do what the nature of the character entails, and that includes being the controlling sex master that Christian Grey was.

Experiences

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Charlie credits his readiness to take on unreserved sex scenes in front of the screen to his previous role in the UK TV show Queer as Folk. The said series’ story revolved around three gay men living in Manchester.

“It [had] incredibly explicit sexual scenes with a man. I mean I’m 16 and 17 years wiser now. So if I could do it when I was 18 with a guy, I can certainly do it at 33 with a lady,” he affirmed.

When asked about how the movie might affect his longtime girlfriend Morgana McNelis, he said he is assured that since Morgana had read the trilogy and had been very supportive and excited about his casting into the film, it will do no ill-effects in their relationship.

He also spoke about the chemistry between him and co-star Dakota Johnson who will be playing his on-screen love interest, the very modest Anastasia Steele: “As soon as we got in the room and started reading with Dakota, I knew that I definitely wanted to do it, because there was a tangible chemistry between us. It felt kind of exciting and fun and weird and compelling, and so that was it.”

The attraction they will build up between each other is very vital for the movie and will either make or break it.

Protests

A campaigning web platform, Change.org had recently taken on a move calling producers and makers of the Fifty Shades of Grey film adaptation to change the chosen cast and put Matt Bomer, White Collar actor, and Sin City star Alexis Bledel in the stead of Hunnam and Johnson. Presently, the campaign has already reached its 50,000th signature mark.

However, Dana Brunetti, Fifty Shades of Grey producer, tried to ease fans venting anger over casting choices  saying that the looks are not only the factoring elements that is taken into consideration when choosing who will play who in a movie. The point list includes availability, talent, the desire to do the said role and of course chemistry with the other players. He encouraged outraged fans to keep an open mind about the matter.

Matt Bomer who was singled out as the perfect epitome of Christian Grey’s character had already said his piece about it – he thanked the supporters for it but he also stated that he is looking forward to seeing Charlie and Dakota do the roles together. Alexis Bledel has also issued a statement to that effect.
