Google Glass recently made it to the top of the list of the best inventions of 2012, a huge achievement given the fact that it is still under development. It can easily be described as a computer built into the frame of glasses. The computer is capable of enforcing an augmented reality that can become part of our daily lives; it can be worn at all times and is likely to become THE gadget to buy. It is said to hit stores in 2014 and has features such as sharing photos, simultaneous video-chats, map searches and regular browsing over the internet. It started off as a research and development program by Google to try and formulate a way to make head-mounted displays that could augment reality. The concept has been revisited many times in fantasy or future centered movies, and people have been wishing for it to become a reality for a long time. Google Glass is a product that will display information in a smartphone format, but due to its hands-free feature and easier interface, is likely to reel in a lot of customers.
Apart from these features, it is also said to be equipped with sensitive voice commands and search options. It Earlier prototypes are said to be much larger in appearance, but the final design is sleek and minimalistic. Its functionality has not been affected though and it has been compared to Steve Mann’s EyeTap. The product is incorporated with Android OS, and is currently being developed by Google XLab. The team of innovators in said lab is known for being focused toward highly futuristic technologies. They are the same team that’s working on self-driving cars. The infamous project was unveiled by one of the Google employees on Google+ and news about eager fans are said to scour the internet for any news about upcoming features. People’s reactions have been quite enthusiastic regarding the prototype, but there have also been quite a lot of people criticizing the product for being satirically designed. The shape of the product is such that it seems a lot like products seen in Sci-fi movies, thus parodies and other user reviews have been making the rounds. However, it has received a lot of good publicity too. For examples, models wore a prototype to film audiences at the New York Fashion Week, and Time magazine has already listed it as one of the best inventions of 2012.
According to the New York Times, the headgear should be available for public at around the same prices as smartphones are, but it is likely that entry level prices will be incredibly high, given that this is a relatively new concept. Not only this, it is meant to have a lot of new features smartphones currently don’t have, so discussions about this subject vary. A large part of the population is criticizing the decision to make this product available to the public because it could cause serious accidents. If one is distracted by their headgear while driving, or even when they are managing two activities at the same time it could cause disasters. Either way, the product is highly anticipated and will undoubtedly cause a revolution when it is finally revealed to the public in finished form.
