The third preseason game is when most NFL teams let their starters play, often into the third quarter. This weekend’s contests should resemble most closely ‘real’ NFL games, with at least a bit of offensive game-planning after a few days of trying to establish the regular-season routine. The fourth preseason game is usually a showcase for players who will be trying to get jobs elsewhere, so tune in now.
Here’s what we’ll be watching:
THURSDAY NIGHT
Pittsburgh Steelers at Philadelphia Eagles: The Eagles have had some minor injuries to the running backs and traded this week for Kenjon Barner, who played for coach Chip Kelly at Oregon. Barner probably hasn’t had enough time in camp to get in this game. Reason to watch: It’s on (NFL Network), and it’s the only Thursday night game.
FRIDAY NIGHT
New York Jets at New York Giants: Former Jets coach Weeb Ewbank used to say this preseason game was for ‘the braggin’ rights’ to New York. Back then, both teams actually played in New York. Now they share the same stadium in a neighboring state. Do you want the braggin’ rights to East Rutherford, N.J.? The Giants need to get their first-string offense and quarterback Eli Manning in gear after a pair of dreadful showings. Oddly, though, the Giants are 3-0 in preseason.
SATURDAY NIGHT
St. Louis Rams at Cleveland Browns: Brian Hoyer didn’t so much win Cleveland’s quarterback battle as watch Johnny Manziel lose it. Still, Hoyer’s grasp on the starting job is tenuous. The Browns’ offense looked awful on Monday night against the Washington Redskins and both quarterbacks need to step it up.
SUNDAY AFTERNOON
San Diego Chargers at San Francisco 49ers: So far the only good thing about the 49ers is their new stadium and its fancy array of foods. That said, the 49ers couldn’t use the field on Wednesday due to its poor condition. Playing without six of their starters on defense, the 49ers have been outscored 57-3 in their two preseason games. Ack.
Today’s question: Which game will you be watching and why? Answers in the comment box, please.
