Penalties against the Chiefs cost them the championship
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs both had something to prove on the field of Super Bowl LV at the newly constructed Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. The Chiefs returned to claim a second championship following their victory in 2020 and the Buccaneers wanted to win a home game championship with Super Bowl legend Tom Brady.
The Buccaneers invested a lot towards this championship including the construction of the Raymond James stadium as well as recruiting former Super Bowl champions from the Patriots, Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski. The Bucs had a limited history with only one prior Super Bowl appearance and win in 2003.

The Bucs invested everything they possibly could in securing the championship against the returning champions to secure a rare second consecutive championship. The Chief might have come to claim their second championship title but the Bucs wasn’t going to make it easy.
The Chief started strong in the first quarter but the Bucs took a massive lead by the second quarter with a 21-6 halftime lead over the Chiefs. A critical point of the game occurred seconds before the end of the second half when the Chief received two pass-interference penalties along with 90 penalty yards in the second quarter.

The Bucs took advantage of the second half as the Chief received several penalties that provided the ultimate advantage to score more yards with two bonus touchdowns with a 15 point lead. Fans were shocked by the first touchdown seconds before the end of the first half but the Bucs went onto score a second touchdown moments later moving the ball 70 yards.
Brady focused on pass plays with Rob Gronkowski catching for two touchdowns while avoiding any costly penalties that proved to be an issue for the Chiefs. The Chiefs defense wasn’t strong enough to protect against the Bucs offense leaving Patrick Mahomes unprotected for a majority of the game that was seen during an impressive incomplete touchdown pass despite being tackled by the Bucs.

The Bucs presented both strong defense and offense while avoiding penalties that was the Achilles heel of this championship game for the Chiefs. The Buccaneers won the championship game 31-9 for a first championship home game win and the second Super Bowl champion title since 2003.
