Famed comedy actor, Lucille Ball, was known for her funny character that captures our hearts in “I Love Lucy” and we’re celebrating Ball’s birthday with some of her iconic roles in TV and film. Lucille Ball was born on this day in 1911 and we honor the iconic comedic actor.
From 1951 to 1957, Ball captured our hearts playing the comedic sweetheart named Lucy in the TV show, “I Love Lucy.” You might be familiar with this TV show but you might know less about her appearances in movies.
“Yours, Mine, and Ours” (1968) with Ball starring as a widower with eight children, falls in love with another widower with 10 children and they’re lives turn upside down taking care of 18 children in one house. This classic movie was remade in 2005 starring Dennis Quaid and Rene Russo as two parents trying to raise all their kids.
Ball got the chance to bring out her inner glamour queen with the 1945 film “Ziegfeld Follies” that features glamourous music numbers and fabulous costumes. This film is about an impresario, Florenz Ziegfeld Jr., looks down from heaven at his new revue in the grand old style. This film features a star-studded cast including Fred Astaire, Judy Garland, Esther Williams, and Gene Kelly.
Another glamourous old Hollywood film featuring Ball in the 1946 classic “Easy To Wed” that is about a reporting attempting to compromise the reputation of a tycoon’s slandered daughter to prevent a libel case in the newspaper.
In 1940, Ball played another comedic role in the 1938 film, “Next Time I Marry.” Ball plays the character of Heiress Nancy Crocker Fleming that is looking to gain her inheritance under the condition that she marries a “plain American.” The father of Nancy is concerned a foreign escort would steal her heart and money.
In 1940, Ball played two characters including Clara Fields Hinklin and Mercedes Vasquez in the film “You Can’t Fool Your Wife.” The main characters are Clara Fields Hinklin and Andrew Hinklin that were high school sweethearts but their marriage becomes dull after five years. Andrew gets stuck in a work engagement to entertain a client named Mr. Battincourt from London and Andrew soon learns Battincourt is a party animal that causes trouble with Clara. Battincourt tries to bring the couple back together by giving Clara a beauty treatment and throwing a costume party but an identical twin, Mercedes Vasquez, shows up and it confuses everyone’s true identities.
After Ball’s success on “I Love Lucy” she eventually made her return to television with “The Lucy Show” from 1962 to 1968 which was a sketch show featuring the iconic redhead.
