The Legendary Broadway Production Is Being Made Into A Movie

“Cats,” the film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s famous musical, features a star-studded cast. But that didn’t stop critics from being creeped out by the trailer. The trailer features Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, Jason Derulo, and other stars as cat-human hybrids, and it didn’t sit well with many audiences.

“In a teaser clip released earlier this week, director Tom Hooper lauded the movie’s use of ‘digital fur technology’ to create ‘the most perfect covering of fur,'” CNN reported. “When the cats were revealed, however — an uncanny amalgamation of the actors’ human faces and a feline-adjacent body — social media users were less than convinced.”

Many Twitter users described the trailer as “weird” and “haunting.” A user named Celeste Ng Tweeted, “You all keep saying the names of people who are in this film. How were they convinced to do this and how is it possible even they couldn’t… make this less weird?”

For people who could stomach the trailer, the film is due out in 2020.

“Featuring Lloyd Webber’s iconic music and a world-class cast of dancers under the guidance of Tony-winning choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler (Hamilton, In the Heights), the film reimagines the musical for a new generation with spectacular production design, state-of-the-art technology, and dance styles ranging from classical ballet to contemporary, hip-hop to jazz, street dance to tap,” said an official “Cats” press release.
