Trump Accused of Spinning a “New Big Lie” Amid Shutdown
President Donald Trump is under fire again, this time accused of spinning a “new Big Lie”, that America is being torn apart by radical left violence. Journalist Thom Hartmann, in a widely shared opinion piece, says the claim is nothing more than fearmongering designed to distract the public and justify voter suppression.
Hartmann draws a straight line between this new talking point and Trump’s earlier election fraud narrative. He argues that the “radical left chaos” storyline, now flooding Fox News and conservative media, is an echo of 2024, when Republican-backed restrictions allegedly stripped more than 4 million Americans of their right to vote, enough to hand Trump the White House.
“This is straight from the Goebbels playbook,” Hartmann warns. “Repeat a colossal lie until people believe it. Democrats need to call it out for what it is: disinformation.”
Supporters, meanwhile, claim Trump is simply naming the threat. On social media, hashtags like #RadicalLeftViolence are trending, framing the unrest as proof of Democratic failure. Critics counter that FBI data shows crime is down, and so-called “leftist” violence represents a fraction of extremist incidents compared to the far right.
The battle lines are clear: Trump and his allies are pushing a narrative of left-wing anarchy, while watchdogs argue it’s a dangerous smokescreen for deeper attacks on democracy. As the shutdown drags on, the question is whether this “new Big Lie” will stick, or collapse under the weight of facts.
