Stars Line Up After Jimmy Kimmel’s Show Pulled — Jason Bateman Says the Fight Isn’t Over
Jason Bateman has led the charge in calling the network’s decision a wake-up call, and the abrupt suspension of *Jimmy Kimmel Live!* has rocked Hollywood and sparked a national discussion on free speech.
When the *Ozark* star appeared on NBC’s *Today* show, he was blunt about ABC’s decision to cancel Kimmel’s late-night talk show after his contentious comments regarding Charlie Kirk’s murder.
“Well, to put it mildly, it’s concerning,” Bateman remarked. “Everyone needs to pause and consider their feelings regarding this type of situation. You simply cannot wait, so I’m sure there are a lot of conversations going on already.”
A “collective response” from those who view the move as an assault on creative freedom is what the 56-year-old actor anticipated. “Especially people doing what you do,” Bateman said to host Craig Melvin, implying that media voices might soon unite.
Why Kimmel Was Suspended
Following his Monday night monologue in which he questioned former President Donald Trump’s response and criticized political reactions to Kirk’s tragic death, Kimmel was suspended. By Wednesday, ABC declared that the show would be discontinued “indefinitely,” a decision that instantly caused controversy among both celebrities and viewers.
Hollywood Reacts
Hollywood responded quickly and unanimously in support of Kimmel, even as Trump applauded the cancellation on social media, saying, “Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done.”
“This isn’t right,” Ben Stiller wrote on social media. Support was also expressed by Jamie Lee Curtis, Henry Winkler, Alison Brie, and John Legend, who amplified a post denouncing political pressure on networks as “fascist.” Chris Hayes of MSNBC went one step further and described it as “the most straightforward attack on free speech from state actors I’ve ever seen in my life.”

Keith Olbermann, a former MSNBC host, went all scorched earth on X, accusing Trump’s America of fostering the conditions that resulted in Kirk’s murder and declaring that he should “burn in hell.”
The Bigger Question
The tragedy is now overshadowed by the more general question: what does Kimmel’s suspension mean for free speech on television, given that the accused shooter is awaiting trial and prosecutors are pursuing the death penalty?
Bateman’s Warning
According to Bateman, the answer is obvious: the industry, audiences, and entertainers cannot afford to ignore this. He cautioned, “You just can’t stand by and let stuff like that go on.”
With the biggest names in Hollywood rallying, ABC might discover that its suspension has sparked a movement rather than just controversy.
