A New Phase Begins as US Signals Dramatic Surge in Iran Strikes

 

Tensions in the Middle East intensified this week as the United States signaled a significant escalation in its military campaign against Iran. Senior officials say the pace and scale of operations are expected to grow rapidly, while diplomatic pressure and warnings from Washington continue to mount.

Speaking during a press briefing in Tampa, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth made it clear that the military campaign is entering a more aggressive phase. According to Hegseth, the United States has only begun its operation and is prepared to dramatically expand its actions in the coming days.

“We’ve only just begun to fight — and we intend to do so decisively,” Hegseth told reporters. He emphasized that the United States has both the resources and determination to maintain the offensive, dismissing any suggestion that the campaign could lose momentum. “Our supplies are strong and our resolve is ironclad,” he added.

The defense chief also confirmed that US air operations over Iran are set to increase significantly. More fighter squadrons, additional defensive systems, and more frequent bomber missions are expected as the military broadens its operational reach.

Hegseth also expressed frustration with the United Kingdom’s initial hesitation to allow American forces to use British bases for operations earlier in the conflict. While he acknowledged that cooperation has since improved, he described the delay as “unfortunate,” noting that earlier access could have accelerated the campaign.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump delivered a blunt message to members of Iran’s security forces during remarks at the White House. Addressing members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, the military, and police, the president urged them to lay down their weapons and side with the Iranian people.

Trump warned that those who continue to support the regime risk severe consequences. At the same time, he offered assurances of immunity to those who choose to defect. “You can stand up for your country and be safe,” he said. “But if you continue down this path, the outcome will not be good.”

The president also claimed that Iranian officials have attempted to initiate talks to end the fighting, though he suggested that those efforts may have come too late.

The rising rhetoric follows a dramatic series of military exchanges across the region. Iran launched one of its most intense waves of attacks so far, firing hundreds of drones and missiles toward Israel and several US-aligned countries in the Gulf. Air defense systems across Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates intercepted many of the projectiles, though some debris caused injuries and property damage.

Missile strikes and drone attacks also triggered alerts across major Gulf cities, including Riyadh, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai. Explosions were reported in Qatar and Kuwait, while a major petroleum refinery in Bahrain was hit by a missile strike that sparked a massive fire.

The conflict has also spread beyond the immediate region. Azerbaijan reported drone strikes near its border with Iran, injuring civilians and damaging infrastructure, while tensions increased along key maritime routes in the Persian Gulf.

Military leaders say the conflict entered a new phase after a US submarine sank an Iranian warship earlier this week — the first time since World War II that an American submarine destroyed an enemy vessel using a torpedo.

Israeli officials have also indicated that operations are expanding. Israel’s military says it has carried out thousands of strikes on Iranian targets since the campaign began, targeting military facilities and infrastructure across the country.

As the situation continues to evolve rapidly, governments around the world are closely monitoring developments and preparing for potential further escalation. With both sides signaling determination to press forward, the coming days could prove decisive for the broader stability of the Middle East.
