Skip The Canned Goods And Buy This Instead

Experts are advising people on how to stock their shelves before an emergency. While most people go towards bread, milk, canned goods or nonperishable goods, it turns out we have been doing it all wrong.

Weather emergencies are always to be taken very seriously whether it is lava flowing through your backyard or a hurricane. Hopefully you don’t have to face a natural disaster in your lifetime, but if you do, try going for produce instead of the nonperishable goods.

Buy fruit that doesn’t ripen quickly. Stay away from bananas and go towards fruits that last longer like apples and oranges. Apples are high in fiber and can actually last up to three months. The thick skin and high acid content allows citrus fruits, such as oranges, to last for up to two weeks without refrigeration. Buying unripe avocados are also a great option. They will last about a week and will provide plenty of vitamins and minerals. This is also true for tomatoes.

If you find yourself staring at empty bread shelves before an emergency, bypass the carbs and head for the produce section.
