Vinay Menon, who once knew little about football and had never seen a match in his life, has become a notable figure in the sport, thanks to a chance encounter with Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich in 2009. Born in Kerala and inspired by his maternal ‘yogi’ grandfather, Menon initially pursued a career in wellness, yoga, and relaxation exercises, delivering services to billionaires and celebrities at a luxury hotel in Dubai.
Menon’s life took a dramatic turn when he was recommended to Abramovich through a family connection. After delivering wellness sessions to Abramovich’s family, Menon was invited to Chelsea’s Cobham training ground. Abramovich, impressed by Menon’s approach, requested that he work with Chelsea’s first-team squad, making Menon the Premier League’s first wellness coach.
“I was an Indian, who was never exposed to football, entering a massive club and it seemed impossible,” Menon recalls. “There was a big barrier, but it was not an immovable rock because it came from the owner himself—he initiated that change so everyone was ready to try.”
Despite the initial culture shock, as Chelsea had been either Premier League champions or runners-up in the previous five seasons, Menon’s innovative wellness methods began to make an impact. “We are talking about elite performance—change is always difficult,” he notes. “Adding or taking away is always difficult; people don’t want to change because they are already performing and winning. Why should they?”
Menon’s breakthrough came when striker Didier Drogba became his key advocate. “Didier was the initial one—Chelsea is like one big family and we just sat and ate in the canteen with the players, and so we started a conversation organically while eating,” Menon explains. “He asked what I could do for him, and I told him we could try this. That was the moment where football opened up in front of me.”
Following Drogba’s endorsement, other key players such as Joe Cole, Frank Lampard, and John Terry began seeking out Menon’s services. His work eventually garnered support from the medical department and became an integral part of the team’s wellness regimen.
Menon’s journey from a wellness coach with limited football knowledge to a respected figure in the sport highlights the transformative power of openness to new ideas and the impact of strong advocacy. His story is a testament to how an unexpected meeting can lead to remarkable changes and successes in one’s career.
