White House Summit In Wake Of Mass Shooting
In the wake of two mass shootings last weekend, the Trump administration is hosting a forum at the White House on Internet extremism. At least one of the shooters, Patrick Crusius, was a regular visitor to the site 8chan, and he posted a racist, anti-immigrant manifesto on the site before killing twenty people at a Wal-Mart in El Paso.
“We must recognize that the internet has provided a dangerous avenue to radicalize disturbed minds and perform demented acts,” Trump said at a press conference after the shooting. “We must shine light on the dark recesses of the internet and stop mass murders before they start. The internet likewise is used for human trafficking, illegal drug distribution, and so many other heinous crimes. The perils of the internet and social media cannot be ignored, and they will not be ignored.”
Trump said he supports stronger laws regarding background checks for people who want to purchase guns. He says the National Rifle Association, America’s premier gun-rights group, has always supported stronger background checks. Trump said he agrees with the NRA’s stance.
“Serious discussions are taking place between House and Senate leadership on meaningful Background Checks. I have also been speaking to the NRA, and others, so that their very strong views can be fully represented and respected. Guns should not be placed in the hands of the mentally ill or deranged people. I am the biggest Second Amendment person there is, but we all must work together for the good and safety of our Country. Common sense things can be done that are good for everyone!” Trump tweeted.
