Happy Birthday to Wendy!

The fast-food chain Wendy’s is turning 50 years old this month – and fans can celebrate Wendy’s birthday with free food, including cheeseburgers, frosties, fries, and more.

“Oh, just rolling out free food for our 50th birthday nbd,” Wendy’s official Twitter account tweeted earlier this week. Wendy’s fans can apparently access free food by downloading an official Wendy’s app, according to Business Insider.

“Customers who download the Wendy’s app can use the scanner tool on any Wendy’s cup or takeout bag that comes with a purchase. This will unlock free menu items that can be redeemed on another trip to Wendy’s and can include a cheeseburger, fries, a frosty, and more,” Business Insider reported. “The chain also launched a limited-edition Birthday Cake Frosty and Birthday Cake Frosty Cookie Sundae at participating Wendy’s locations in honor of its 50th anniversary on Friday.”

The first Wendy’s restaurant opened in 1969 in Columbus, Ohio. The original Wendy’s was founded by Dave Thomas, who, according to Wendy’s Web site, dreamed at age eight of “running the best restaurant in the world.”

“He didn’t just achieve his dream, he shared it with everyone. Dave loved two things above all else: food and people. That’s why he started Wendy’s. He believed in a place where you get great food, made fresh, served by nice people. At Wendy’s, we do our best to carry on that simple idea, every day. Our name is Wendy’s, but we will always be Dave’s Place,” Wendy’s says on its Web site.

Dave Thomas died in 2002, but Wendy’s legacy continues in the form of thousands of stores worldwide.
