Sports News: NFL, PGA & More
The last of golf’s major championships, the PGA Championship, could also help determine slots on the United States Ryder Cup team for the matches in France at the end of September. But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves with that.
If you are reading your favorite blog (this one!) early enough on Friday, you’re on alert to catch the second round of the PGA Championship from St. Louis at 2 p.m. ET on TNT. Leave work early, find a comfortable pub and treat yourself to an adult beverage. Hey, it’s summer.
Rounds three and four on Saturday and Sunday begin on TNT at 11 a.m. and then move to CBS at 2 p.m.
NFL preseason game are abundant – check local listings for your area team’s game. Nationally, the theoretical biggie (if a preseason opener can be big) is Saturday night’s meeting between the Minnesota Vikings and Denver Broncos. Former Vikings quarterback Case Keenum is now Denver’s starter, having been supplanted in Minneapolis by Kirk Cousins, formerly of the Washington Redskins. Don’t expect either to play much. This one is on NFL Network at 9 p.m.
NASCAR holds forth at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday in the Monster Energy Cup Consumers Energy 400 at 2:30 p.m. on NBC Sports Network. The fellas have been celebrating the Ford Mustang this week, as the 10 millionth rolled out of the Ford plant in Dearborn. The new Mustang will debut in NASCAR next season in the Daytona 500.
Been missing soccer since the end of the World Cup? Got just the thing for you. Arsenal and Manchester City kick off the English Premier League season on Sunday. Man City is defending the EPL title, while Arsenal is without longtime manager Arsene Wenger for the first time in more than two decades after he retired in May. Tune in at 11 a.m. on NBC Sports Network.
Baseball’s best televised bet on Sunday is the Seattle Mariners at Houston Astros at 2 p.m. on TBS. Houston leads the American League West, seven games ahead of third-place Seattle.
Kindly place your heiner in your recliner and relax. You’ve earned it.
