Enjoy Your Labor Day Weekend With Sports
At last. The college football season, which kinda sorta started last week, really gets going on this holiday weekend.
You are free to watch your favorite team. You are free to watch any teams you like. There are so many great matchups we couldn’t possibly put them all in here (that’s why there are TV listings!).
We’ll just make a few recommendations and let you settle that heiner in the recliner.
College Football
People think of this one as a big school vs. a little school, but in actuality Florida Atlantic University has more students than Oklahoma. FAU, under coach Lane Kiffin, put itself on the map with an 11-3 mark last season and travels to Norman to play the No. 7 Sooners. FAU has some noteworthy players, especially running back Devin Singletary. Saturday, on Fox, at noon ET.
As that one wraps up, No. 9 Auburn meets No. 6 Washington in Atlanta. ABC shows this at 3:30 p.m. And at 7:30 p.m. on NBC, No. 12 Notre Dame is host to No. 14 Michigan. Hold off until 8 p.m. and its No. 1 Alabama vs. Louisville in Orlando, Fla., on ABC.
NFL
As there’s no NFL action, you get a bonus college game on Sunday. No 25 LSU plays No. 8 Miami in Arlington, Tx., at 7:30 p.m. on ABC.
Tennis
For tennis aficionados, or for those who love sibling rivalries, Friday night’s third-round match at the U.S. Open should be a classic. Even though it’s only No. 17 seed Serena Williams vs. No. 16 Venus Williams. Serena has won 17 of their 29 meetings and she’s still chasing Grand Slam win No. 24. ESPN televises at 7 p.m.
NASCAR
Our friends who go round and round on the NASCAR circuit had last weekend off, but they’re back now and in classic form (literally) for the Southern 500 at Darlington, S.C. It’s a throwback weekend that honors the sport’s greats. The cars will take on color schemes that adorned those of legends.
Brad Keselowski’s No. 2 channel Rusty Wallace’s famous Miller Genuine Draft motif. Clint Bowyer’s No. 14 car will honor Hall of Famer Ned Jarrett with the blue of Jarrett’s Ford Galaxie when he won the Southern 500 in 1965. See it at 6 p.m. Sunday on NBC Sports Network.
Enjoy the Labor Day holiday. Watch prudently.
