A Sports Filled Weekend It Was
The Clash of the Titans looks more like a clash between titans and tight ones.
The Golden State Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven NBA Finals on Sunday night, flattening the Cleveland Cavaliers 132-113. Warriors coach Steve Kerr (neck, back), who had missed all of the playoffs, returned to the bench for this game and said he would coach the remaining games.
Stephen Curry had a triple-double for the Dubs with 32 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists and Kevin Durant scored 33 and had 13 rebounds. LeBron James posted a triple-double for the Cavs, but it was hardly enough. James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love combined for 75 of Cleveland’s points, so the supporting cast and bench did little.
Game 3 is Wednesday night in Cleveland.
GOLF:
Jason Dufner’s up-and-down performance at the Memorial in Dublin, Ohio, finished on an up note. His 77 on Saturday left him four shots behind, but he birdied four holes on the back nine on Sunday to earn a three-shot victory over Anirban Lahiri and Rickie Fowler. His 30-foot putt for par on the 18th hole sealed the victory, his fifth on the PGA Tour.
NHL: The Stanley Cup finals continue on Monday night with the Pittsburgh Penguins leading the Nashville Predators 2-1 in this best-of-seven series. The Predators earned a “statement” win at home on Saturday when they beat the Pens 5-1.
NASCAR: Jimmie Johnson won the AAA 400 Drive for Autism at Dover International Speedway on Sunday. He passed Kyle Larson on an overtime restart to collect his third Monster Energy Cup Series win of the season and the 83rd of his career, tying him with NASCAR Hall of Famer Cale Yarborough on the all-time win list. He took the checkered flag under a caution due to a multi-car crash that ended race on its only overtime attempt. Larson was second and Martin Truex Jr. ran third.
BASEBALL: It was a busy weekend for milestones. Miami Marlins pitcher Edinson Volquez pitched a no-hitter on Saturday, shutting out the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-0. And he did it with a sore foot that he injured facing the first batter. … Albert Pujols of the Los Angeles Angels made his 600th career home run even more memorable, smacking a grand slam on Saturday against the Minnesota Twins. Pujols is the ninth player to reach that total. Sammy Sosa (609) and Jim Thome (612) are the next targets…Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw racked up his 2,000th and is the third fastest to reach that total. The three-time Cy Young Award winner is in his 10th season.
