Breaking NFL News
Who among the employed hasn’t enjoyed the fantasy of simply walking out on the job?
You feel as if you’ve had enough. It’s no longer worth it.
You have other things you can do, or no need to keep doing this one. And off you go.
It rarely happens. But Sunday, as the Buffalo Bills took to their locker room at halftime, cornerback Vontae Davis had his moment.
Showered. Dressed. Left.
He quit. In the middle of a game. Buh-bye. Not coming back. Ten years in the NFL and he’s over and out.
“This isn’t how I pictured retiring from the NFL,” Davis said in a statement issued later. “But today on the field, reality hit me fast and hard: I shouldn’t be out there anymore.”
Football, of course, is the ultimate no-quit game. Injured players risk further damage to stay in the game. They push through rehab to get back on the field. Davis just walked away, to the chagrin of his teammates, who finished absorbing a 31-20 loss at the hands of the Los Angeles Chargers.
People who quit in haste often wind up at the same office to apologize and ask for their job back. Don’t expect that to happen here. Vontae Davis made a decision and executed it (and his career). He will not be back with the Bills, or most likely, with anyone in the NFL.
No, don’t expect a farewell party.
