GOLF
By the time this blog reaches your eyeballs, the British Open should be over.
Delayed by a day on Saturday due to treacherous winds in Scotland, the venerable golf tournament moved its final round to Monday. There was a three-way tie for the lead when play ended Sunday between Jason Day, Louis Oosthuizen (who won in 2010) and amateur Paul Dunne.
Dunne, a 22-year-from Dublin, shot a third-round score of 6-under-par 66 to set an amateur scoring record for British Open third rounds. His 54-hole total of 204, (12 under) broke the Open’s amateur 54-hole record by six shots.
Jordan Spieth, who won the Masters and U.S. Open, was one stroke behind the leaders.
In the LPGA, Chella Choi won for the first time in seven years on the Tour and in her 157th start. This came as a huge relief not only to her but to her father, Ji Leon Choi, who had agreed to caddy for his daughter (now 24) until she won. The South Korean birdied the first playoff hole at Highland Meadows in Sylvania, Ohio to win the Marathon Classic.
BASEBALL
Cincinnati Reds reliever Aroldis Chapman became the fastest pitcher to 500 career strikeouts when he fanned five of the six batters he faced in the Reds’ 5-3 loss in 11 innings to the Cleveland Indians on Sunday. Chapman reached that mark in 292 innings, 13 fewer than the previous record holder, Craig Kimbrel.
FOOTBALL
Quarterback Brett Favre was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame on Saturday night in front of 67,000 fans at Lambeau Field. He is the sixth Packers player to have a number retired by the team, joining Tony Canadeo (3), Don Hutson (14), Bart Starr (15), Ray Nitschke (66) and Reggie White (92). Favre led the Packers to two Super Bowls, winning one.
